    EMC IDEAS Genital Warts

You just found some small bumps near your genitals. What could they be? There is a decent chance you may have just discovered that you have one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases – genital warts.

    EMC Ideas describes causes as:
Genital warts are caused by HPV, the human papillomavirus. While there are many strains of HPV, only a few actually cause genital warts. These forms of the virus are highly contagious and are almost always spread through sexual contact. There are several things that increase your risk of developing genital warts, including:
    • Lack of STD knowledge regarding your sexual partner(s)
    • Multiple sexual partners
    • Presence of other viral infections
    • Sexual activity beginning at a young age
    EMC Ideas describes symptoms as:
It is important to remember that some people with sexually transmitted diseases, including genital warts, have no external symptoms. Even if there are no signs of the disease, the person is still contagious and can spread it to others. While patients often exhibit no symptoms, others do, these can include:
    • Raised, flesh-colored spots in the genital area
    • Growths with the more typical “cauliflower” look of warts in the genital area
    • Abnormal dampness in the area of the growth
    • Itching
    • Increased or abnormal vaginal discharge
    Complications
Not only can genital warts be spread to sexual partners if untreated, they can also grow and spread on your own body requiring more vigorous treatment than if they had been taken care of promptly. Additionally, some strains of HPV are known cause of cervical cancer. Other strains are linked to vaginal, anal, and penile cancers.
    Prevention
The only sure prevention for genital warts is complete abstinence. The next best option is monogamous sex with a partner who has been tested and is known to be disease-free.
If a person has genital warts, they should avoid sexual activity until the warts are treated and they are free of the illness. Additionally, they should avoid any skin-to-skin contact with the affected areas as this can spread the illness as well.
New vaccines for women can help to prevent contraction of HPV and genital warts. Unfortunately these vaccinations do not protect against all strains of HPV, though they do target those most associated with cervical cancer.
Condom use is encouraged to protect against genital warts. It must be kept in mind, however, that the warts can form on areas not covered by condoms. As such, condom use is not fool-proof and is no substitute for treatment.
    Treatment
While genital warts can disappear without treatment, there is no way to be certain this will occur in any given case. As such, if you suspect genital warts, you should see your doctor. They will either treat your warts with medication or by removal. Smaller warts can be removed with laser, freezing or burning. Larger warts may require surgical intervention.
It should be noted that removal of the warts does not destroy the virus. Your body will still carry HPV and as such, the warts can recur. Even if the warts do not come back, condoms should still be used to prevent transmission of the virus to your sexual partners.

    EMC Ideas: Understanding Chlamydia

Chlamydia is the most common STD or sexually transmitted disease in the United States. The infection is spread easily since if very often has no symptoms and can be passed between sex partners without knowing it. 75% of the infections women have and 50% of the infections men have are without symptoms.

EMC Ideas Tells you How To Tell If You Have Chlamydia

It’s not easy to know if you have chlamydia because the symptoms are not always apparent. However when the symptoms do occur they are noticeable within 1-3 weeks after contact and my often include the following:

    • Abnormal vaginal discharge that has an odor
      Bleeding between menstrual cycles
      Painful menstrual cycles
      Abdominal pain accompanied by fever
      Painful sex
Burning or itching around or in the vagina
      Painful urination

    Symptoms of Chlamydia in Men

    • Small amounts cloudy or clear discharge from the tip of the penis
    • Pain when urinating
    • Itching or burning around the opening of the penis
    • Swelling and pain around the testicles

    Diagnosing Chlamydia

There are several tests which your family doctor uses to check for chlamydia. Your doctor will use a swab and take a sample from the urethra in men or the cervix in women. The sample will then be sent to a lab for analysis. There are other tests that check urine samples for the bacteria.

    Treatments For Chlamydia

If chlamydia is already present your doctor will write a prescription for oral antibiotics. Azithromycin or Zithromax is the most common as well as Doxycycline. Your doctor will also advise that your sexual partner seek treatment to prevent another outbreak of Chlamydia.

Chlamydia will clear up in around a week or two. It is extremely important to completely finish all the antibiotic even if you already feel better.

Sometimes with severe infection in women there may be a need to be hospitalized to get intravenous antibiotics along with pain medicine.

Once the antibiotics are taken chlamydia patients are them retested to be certain the infection is healed. This is important if you are not sure if your sexual partner also sought treatment. It is strongly advised to refrain from having sex until you and your sexual partner are positive either of you have the disease.

EMC Ideas says that when Chlamydia Is Left Untreated…

If Chlamydia is left untreated there are many serious risks and serious health problems that could occur:

Women – Chlamydia if left untreated can cause pelvic inflammatory disease which leads to damage of the fallopian tubes and can even cause infertility. Untreated chlamydia can also cause an ectopic pregnancy which is when the fertilized egg becomes implanted and develops outside the uterus. Chlamydia also causes premature births and chlamydia can be passed from mother to child upon giving birth. The infection can cause eye infections, blindness or pneumonia in a newborn baby.

Men – Chlamydia causes nongonococcal urethritis which is an infection of the urethra. This infection can also cause Epididymitis which is an infection in the epididymis which is the tube that carries sperm. Proctitis can also occur which is an inflamed rectum.
